We had seven Master Gardeners who toured the Xeriscape Garden on Saturday, May 2. Barbara St. Clair, the Xeriscape Garden project leader, graciously spent over an hour explaining to us the various parts and sections of the garden. They had just completed a work day in their new project which was a rock garden that was inspired by the Horticulture Magazine article they had researched. She shared that they have a $3,500.00 annual budget and that they recently had their plant sale that raised over $16,000.00 dollars; it must have been quite a plant sale.
Amazingly, with 200 members they have two garden projects, the Xeriscape Garden and the Demonstration Garden at the Botanical Gardens. They focus, research and spend the winter months planning which specific plants they want to plant given the moisture, shade, sun, and soil conditions of the gardens. They seem to have great success with the various regions of watering. It was a beautiful sunny day perfect to see the gardens in their glory.
Thanks to Judy Brieske, Betsy Durham, Rose Matta, Viola McWilliams, Judy Niziolek, and Frank Sinning for joining me on this tour. Barbara St. Clair has interest in coming to visit our gardens and I would love to give her a project tour with permission if this comes to pass.
